Hadrian

The Romans, historically, exhibited more progressive attitudes towards sexuality compared to much of Europe, including modern times. In this context, the Roman Emperor Hadrian is particularly notable. He shared a close bond with Antinous, a young Greek soldier. Historical records show the duo frequently indulging in activities like hunting, fishing, and penning affectionate letters.

Tragically, upon Antinous’s death, Hadrian deified him, leading to widespread worship. Hadrian’s own literary pursuits, which included erotic poems and an autobiography, allude to his “beloved man,” believed by many to be a reference to Antinous. Many early sources explicitly state that their relationship was of a romantic and sexual nature.
