Jane Addams

In today’s times, Jane Addams would likely be recognized and accepted as a lesbian. A renowned suffragette and social advocate, many believe she was in a relationship with Ellen Starr, a fellow activist. Together, they founded Hull House in Chicago, a haven for immigrants.

After her relationship with Starr, Addams started a close bond with Mary Rozet Smith, a generous philanthropist. They shared a home and often referred to themselves as married. Their frequent letters to each other during separations are a testament to their bond, which sadly ended with Mary’s passing in 1934.
